There''s a shovel of dirt lurking on many farms that threatens to cost thousands of dollars in equipment repair and downtime. And it''s hiding in a place most farmers will never look. That place is inside their diesel storage tanks where mismanagement and misunderstanding have allowed the threat to grow.Last summer, Successful Farming magazine worked with petroleum experts from Country Energy LLC, a regional fuel supplier formed by Farmland Industries and Cenex Harvest States, and employees of the Andale Farmers Co-op, Andale, Kansas, to help make farmers aware of this threat. We shared the $110 cost of sampling and cleaning diesel storage tanks on 20 farms in south central Kansas. Though stored gasoline also gets dirty, we didn''t include it because fewer engine problems result.

Variable-flow, closed-center, load-sensing hydraulic system adjusts flow and pressure to 3,300 p.s.i. for full hydraulic force to work tools at any engine speed. Single-pin backhoe bucket has 205[degrees] linkage rotation with integrated lifting eye. Operator station includes white-faced gauges, hand throttle, new boom lock position, and pilot-operated stabilizer controls. A portable backhoe that can be towed to a job site, unhooked, and then used has been introduced. Heavy enough for commercial use, the backhoe is ideal for use by farmers, plumbing contractors, homebuilders, landscape contractors, and large-scale gardeners.
Air ScribesPneumatic air scribes were developed as powerful industrial engraving tools. Basically, the air scribe is a small, hand-held air hammer that is operated by compressed air at about 90 pounds of pressure per square inch (psi). Under this high pressure, a piston within the unit drives a hardened bit at blurring speed against whatever object it is pressed. In engraving, the bit can scribe into the toughest of steel alloys; and in fossil preparation, the reciprocating action of this bit can rapidly disassemble the hardest rock. With a little practice and a light touch, matrix rapidly turns to grit and falls away from the fossil. Under magnification (a binocular 4x lens headband-type magnifier is good) the matrix looks as if it is melting. In reality, in addition to a powerful but tiny hammer-chisel action, a harmonic vibration is established, and grains of cemented rock are vibrated apart by waves of energy. These energy waves, of course, also travel through the fossils, and it is the difference in density between the rock and the fossil that allows the fossil to remain intact, at least most of the time.
